Patient education

A plain-language look at joint pain and arthritis, and the practical questions patients ask before a visit.

Understanding Joint Pain

Joint pain can come from worn cartilage, inflammation, an old injury, or overuse. At first it may come and go with activity. Later it can stay with you through the day.

It is worth a visit if pain wakes you at night, morning stiffness lasts more than 30 minutes, swelling does not go away, or pain limits walking or stairs.

An evaluation does not commit you to surgery. It is how you and the provider learn what is going on and which options fit.

Types of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the wearing down of cartilage in a joint. It is the most common cause of joint pain in adults and tends to progress slowly over years.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks the joint lining. It often affects multiple joints symmetrically and is managed in coordination with a rheumatologist.

Post-traumatic arthritis develops after a significant joint injury, sometimes years later. Treatment principles overlap with osteoarthritis.

The Stages of Osteoarthritis

These stages are a general description, not a label for your knee or hip. Your provider reads your exam and images and tells you what they show.

Early on, cartilage wear may be small and symptoms mild or absent. Activity changes are often the first step.

As cartilage wears further, pain can follow activity and then ordinary daily tasks. Injections and physical therapy are often discussed.

When cartilage loss is severe and pain stays, joint replacement is one of the options that may be discussed.

What to Expect from a Consultation

A first visit includes your history, an exam, and a look at any imaging you already have. New imaging may be ordered if it is needed.

The provider then explains the findings and the options, surgical and non-surgical, including the trade-offs. You should have time to think about the choices.

If surgery is the plan, the office walks through preparation, the day of surgery, recovery, and therapy.
